What replacement pricing should include
A complete project may involve the outdoor unit, indoor coil or air handler, controls, electrical work, refrigerant lines, permits, condensate work, commissioning, and backup-heat configuration.
Compare written, all-in totals. A sale price can look favorable until required accessories, installation, disposal, or work on connected systems is added.

Safety comes before the calculation
Shut the system down for burning odors, damaged wiring, severe icing that contacts the fan, or water near electrical components. Refrigerant circuits require qualified service.
Efficiency and operating cost
Use climate-specific performance and expected backup-heat use. Headline efficiency ratings alone do not show cold-weather capacity, installation quality, or the effect of duct losses.
Treat projected savings as a range. Utility rates, usage, weather, maintenance, sizing, and installation quality can matter as much as the efficiency rating printed on the product.

Does the 50% rule always work?
