How to compare repair and replacement costs
A quick framework for deciding whether a quote is worth approving.

1. Build an all-in replacement number
Start with the replacement price, then add delivery, installation, required accessories, permits, setup, data transfer, and haul-away. Subtract only rebates or trade-in values you have confirmed in writing.
This prevents a discounted sticker price from being compared with a complete repair quote. For home systems, connected work such as electrical, venting, duct, plumbing, or structural changes can be a meaningful part of the total.
2. Calculate the repair ratio
Divide the complete repair cost by the all-in replacement cost. A lower ratio generally supports repair, but there is no universal percentage that settles the decision.
The ratio becomes less persuasive when the item is near the end of expected life, parts are scarce, condition is poor, or another major failure is likely. It becomes more persuasive when the item is newer, premium, under warranty, or expensive to install and replace.
3. Price the useful years you are buying
Ask how long the repair is reasonably expected to extend useful life. A $500 repair that likely buys five years is a different decision from the same repair on equipment with several unresolved faults.
Expected lifespan is a planning average, not an expiration date. Maintenance, environment, usage, installation quality, and model design all affect real service life.
4. Use uncertainty deliberately
When the diagnosis is vague or the totals are close, buy information before buying the repair. A second diagnosis, written scope, or model-specific parts check can be more valuable than forcing a yes-or-no answer.
For safety-related, structural, gas, electrical, refrigerant, or water-damage concerns, a qualified professional should define the safe options before cost becomes the deciding factor.
The practical takeaway
Compare complete totals, expected useful years, and the quality of the diagnosis. The cheapest immediate option is not always the lowest-cost decision.
